Welcome to the website for the Stoughton, Wisconsin Rotary Club.  We are proud to be an active member of our community, and we are happy you have stopped by!
My name is Todd McVey and am serving as president of the club for this 2019-2020 Rotary year. I have been an active member of the Stoughton Rotary Club since 2008, and I am the pastor at Good Shepherd by the Lake Lutheran Church.
I am excited to share with you our goals for this year. The emphasis will be on youth. Our club currently awards about $30,000 in scholarships each year, but our plans are to do much more.
  • We have an inbound exchange student named Viivi, who is from Finland. Viivi arrived in August is happy to be in Stoughton for this amazing experience.
  • We are also working with the high school to promote Rotary’s exchange programs our local students. The Short Term Exchange Program (STEP) is a short term summer exchange between families.  The student lives with a foreign student’s family for approximately one month and then both students return to Canada or the US where the foreign student lives with the student’s family for another month. The year long program is designed for High School students to travel and/or study in a different environment.  Students are sponsored by Rotary Clubs in Canada and the United States and are assigned to a foreign country to live and study for a one-year period.
  • We are also working with both the middle school and the high school to award one student from each school each month with a Service Above Self Award. The award will be given to a student who demonstrates a commitment to serve others both at school and in the community.
  • Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a leadership development program for young people who want to learn new skills, build their confidence, and have fun. Events range from one-day seminars to weeklong camps. We hope to send several youth to a seminar this year.
  • Interact clubs bring together young people ages 12-18 to develop leadership skills and learn about the world through service projects and activities. We hope to take some initial steps to establish an interact club in the Stoughton High School.
  • The Downtown Madison Rotary Club also sponsors a Rotary Ethics Symposium in each February with over 200 juniors from 20 Dane County high schools.  The symposium fosters a more thoughtful community with concern for the ethical dimensions of everyday life. By engaging participants in personal decision-making, the symposium fosters an appreciation for the ethical dimensions of their lives. Several Stoughton High School youth attended the Symposium last year, and we will encourage attendance again this year.
Sound like a lot? It is, but this is what we are working on. If you want to be involved, please join our Youth Committee meetings. We are currently meeting the first and third Tuesday of each month at Deak’s.
We’re looking forward to another great year of service above self in the Stoughton community and we invite you to be a part of this great service club called Rotary.
